"Caring and sharing is cause for charming cheers!"
— Cuddles's starring intro, Season 3 of Happy Tree Friends

Cuddles is the mascot of the internet and television franchise, Happy Tree Friends. He is the first character to be created prior to the show's proper debut. While Cuddles made his official debut in the episode, Spin Fun Knowin' Ya, he appeared in the then-unreleased short "Banjo Frenzy" where a blue dinosaur (an earlier version of Lumpy) killed a rabbit character resembling him. Throughout the show, Kenn Navarro has consistently provided Cuddles' voice, but he was originally played by Aubrey Ankrum in "Banjo Frenzy" beforehand. Cuddles is usually depicted as a hyperactive and mischievous rabbit who likes extreme sports, usually while alongside close friends like Lumpy or Toothy.

Concept and creation

Cuddles was the first Happy Tree Friends character made prior to the show's creation.[1] During his time working at Mondo Media, Rhode Montijo sketched a yellow rabbit with the phrase Resistance Is Futile written underneath him on a spreadsheet poster. Rhode hung the drawing up in his workstation, with the intent of allowing his idea to be seen by others. His idea was eventually pitched to the Mondo Media executives, who later accepted the concept.

A rumor stated that Shifty was the second character created for the show. This claim originated in the Happy Tree Friends: Volume #1: First Blood DVD , where an early concept for Lifty & Shifty appears. In reality, Shifty existed before the idea of Happy Tree Friends, and Cuddles is the first official character of the series. [2] The error made its way onto the wiki on Fandom as well.[3]

When the series began development, the rabbit character had undergone several redesigns, including one with gloves and another wearing a complete outfit. Another design of Cuddles featured him in a sketch alongside a beaver, squirrel, and bear character; this drawing was used as the basis of the unreleased short, Banjo Frenzy. At some point in development, Cuddles was given his finalized design, but the creators decided to "experiment with his character" by drawing him Cuddles in several outfits, including farmer's clothing and a samurai outfit. [4]

History

Happy Tree Friends

Cuddles first appears in the Happy Tree Friends in the episode, "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya". As one of four characters introduced in that episode, he constantly appears in the main internet seasons.

Starring intros

  • Season 1: Cuddles waves his arm at the audience.
  • Season 2: Cuddles raises both of his arms up within a yellow forest.
  • Season 3 through Season 5: Cuddles is standing up with his arms out. The quote says, "Caring and sharing is cause for charming cheers!."

Happy Tree Friends: Homerun

Cuddles make his first video game appearance in Happy Tree Friends: Homerun. In this game, Lumpy takes him, Giggles, and Petunia to a playground to have fun together on a new slide. Unfortunately for them, Flippy stumbles across them and happens to flip out through unknown means. Cuddles is one of friends that will be launched off the slide, only to be hit by Flippy, the player character. When he is hit by Flippy's baseball bat, his brain and one of his eyeballs will be forced out of his skull. If Flippy doesn't hit Cuddles in time, the latter will be lethally smacked into a wall.

Happy Tree Friends: Spin Fun

Cuddles is one of the given characters the player can select to be placed on the merry-go-round, which is spun by Lumpy. After Cuddles is launched off the merry-go-round, he will bounce off the ground a few times, taking damage from items scattered around the playfield if he hits them. Once Cuddles ceases movement, the game will end.

Happy Tree Friends: Flippy's Flying Frenzy

Cuddles reappears in Happy Tree Friends: Flippy's Flying Frenzy. In the opening cutscene, he, Giggles, and Toothy are blowing up balloons when Flippy arrives on the scene. Three of the balloons pop, causing Flippy to flip out. In the game itself, Cuddles is one of the victims Flippy's evil side can drag against obstacles while riding a helicopter. Whenever damage is inflicted upon Cuddles, the player is rewarded with points. If Cuddles receives a substantial number of injuries in a short timeframe, the player will be rewarded with a maximum of five stars.

Happy Tree Friends: Blood Money

Cuddles makes another appearance Happy Tree Friends: Blood Money. He is one of three Friends that Lifty & Shifty tortures in order to use their bloodshed for money. Once the game starts, Cuddles will jump onto a trampoline and become airborne, only to be injured by hazardous objects that appear mid-air. Whenever Cuddles is damaged by any of the hazards, he will drip blood that Lifty & Shifty must collect to obtain points. If Cuddles touches a health box, his injuries will repair themselves. Once Cuddles lands onto the ground, he is no longer usable and will be replaced by another Friend.

Happy Tree Friends: Slap Happy

Cuddles returns in Happy Tree Friends: Slap Happy, where he is the only character to appear in the game. The player can harm Cuddles in several ways, but primarily by slapping his cheek with their finger and shaking the screen. If Cuddles suffers too many injuries, he will collapse. However, the player can restruct him by performing CPR on his body or electrocuting him with lightning. Other available options used to harm Cuddles includes a chainsaw that falls on him and slices him in half, spiked walls that closes on Cuddles, and a giant pipe that impales Cuddles' throat. Cuddles is able to be brought back to life from these deaths as well.

Happy Tree Friends (television series)

Cuddles reappears in the television adaptation of Happy Tree Friends. He debuts in the first episode in the series, One Foot in the Grave, where he makes his first appearance in the segment, The Wrong Side of the Tracks. He is the second most recurring character in the series, behind Lumpy. Despite this, Cuddles is mostly regulated into supporting roles. However, he is the starring character in the episode, In a Jam, where he tries to purchase a guitar in order to audition for Lumpy's band.

Starring intros

  • Season 1: Cuddles rides his skateboard over a log.

Arcade games

Fire Escape

Cuddles returns in Fire Escape, where he is one of the victims Flaky has to rescue from a building fire. Cuddles will appear from the building and must be bounced off Flaky's umbrella until he lands in the ambulance to score a point. If Flaky fails to rescue Cuddles, he will violently splatter on the ground. Strangely, it is possible for two Cuddles to appear on-screen together.

Disco Inferno

In Disco Inferno, Cuddles is seen dancing the background.

Hot Potato

Cuddles appears in the background in ''Hot Potato. If the player fails to keep the grenade airborne, it'll explode, killing the characters, including Cuddles.

Hare Trigger

Cuddles is the main protagonist of Hare Trigger. When the game starts, Cuddles will retreat into a cannon and Toothy is tasked with lighting its fuse. Once the player fires the cannon, Cuddles is launched into the air and will bounce across the ground, with his airtime being gradually reduced until he is unable to bounce any longer. Bouncing off trampolines or balloons will send him higher, thus allowing him to stay on the air longer. If Cuddles on either the ducks or the shovel, he is killed and the game will end immediately.

Aim to Freeze

In Aim to Freeze, Cuddles is seen aiding Toothy in the snowball fight against Lumpy, where he peaks through his telescope. Otherwise, he has no effect on gameplay.

Happy Tree Friends: Run and Bun

Cuddles is an unlockable playable character in Happy Tree Friends: Run and Bun. He rides a skateboard, and his favorite level is The Cave. When Cuddles jumps directly off of the ground, he has a jump height superior to Disco Bear's, but his mid-air jumps are much shorter.

Happy Tree Friends: Aggravated Asphalt

Happy Tree Friends: Aggravated Asphalt, Cuddles makes an appearance as an obstacle. Whenever Cuddles shows up, he is standing in front of a hazard. If Flippy's evil side runs into him, Cuddles will be sliced in half and killed.

Lumpy's Lame Card Trick

Cuddles makes a cameo in Lumpy's Lame Card Trick. If the player selects Red Giggles card, Lumpy will summon Cuddles' ears in his magician hat. Lumpy pulls the ears out, revealing Cuddles' severed head, rendering Lumpy confused.

Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm

While Cuddles is present in the Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm (episode) episode of the same name that is included with the game and is featured/mentioned on supplementary material, he isn't present in the game itself. However, the files contain unused mugshots for Cuddles, suggesting that he was originally planned to be playable in the game.[5]

Happy Tree Friends: Deadeye Derby

Cuddles returns in Happy Tree Friends: Deadeye Derby as one of the playable characters of the game, and one of the two who is unlocked by default. He grants the player extra coins when he is used. In his animation on the character select screen, he burns his hands from holding a marshmallow, prompting him to toss it back and forward onto each hand.

Biography

General information

Personality

Cuddles, along with Toothy is taunting a caged baboon.

Cuddles is a rebellious troublemaker who enjoys causing mischief and is often self-centered. Both of these traits have frequently led to his death, though Flaky often attempts to warn Cuddles, but usually to no avail. Despite this, however, Cuddles is usually seen being friendly and cheerful, though he can be gullible at times. In the episode, In a Jam, he is shown to like rock music. As revealed in the Break, Seize the Day, Cuddles suffers from epilepsy. It was mentioned that he is actually allergic to carrots since they make him choke[6]. However, this was later denied in 2015, where Kenn Navarro said that Cuddles loves carrots[7]. Cuddles is talented in many sports, including skateboarding, surfing, and soccer. He also enjoys snowball fights and seem to like fireworks.

Physical information

Cuddles is a yellow rabbit who wears bunny slippers. His visible abdominal marking is a lighter yellow. Inside Cuddles' fur seem to contain pockets, as seen in the episode "In a Jam". On top of Cuddles' head is a white hair tuft, which is modeled identically to his cotton tail. He also has pink cheeks. Natural to his species, Cuddles has very long ears that often move to reflect his expression, as they usually drop down whenever Cuddles is upset.

Cuddles was shown to have grey-colored soles in "In a Jam". However, Cuddles was also briefly seen without his slippers in the episode "The Carpal Tunnel Of Love". In this episode, his soles were colored white instead.

Cuddles' fur is often implied to be somewhat resistant to extreme temperatures, as his Myspace page suggests his fur is resistant to the sun. [citation needed] Furthermore, he is seen without any winter clothing in "Just Be Claus" and "Kringle Karols". However, some episodes have shown Cuddles to be affected by hot substances and objects, and a few episodes like Snow Place to Go demonstrates Cuddles' hyperthermic senses. Cuddles is also seen wearing a scarf in a few episodes. [citation needed]

Other outfits and designs

In "Class Act", Cuddles is wearing a tree costume decorated with two red ornaments and topped with a yellow star.

In "Remains To Be Seen", Cuddles wears a cowboy outfit while trick-or-treating. He is shown wearing a brown hat, a golden star-shaped badge, and a belt carrying a lasso.

In "Ski Patrol", Cuddles is designed with a stylized look. His ears take on a somewhat cubical shape. Additionally, his pupils are completely circular, his limbs are skinnier, and the hair on his head is drawn to look more curly. In this episode, he wears pink gloves.

In "A Change Of Heart", Cuddles wears a green shirt. His bunny slippers are also given additional features, including cleats and an angry expression.

In "In A Jam", Cuddles is dressed like a pirate. He wears an eye patch over his damaged eye and a Jolly-Roger hat similar to Russell's.

In "Cubtron Z", Cuddles is constructed with cardboard to be animated in a stop-motion environment.

In the episode, "New Season Teaser", he is in the same art style as Dick Figures as a yellow stick figure. His ears and hair remain on his head, but he lacks a nose, doesn't wear bunny slippers, and his pink blushes are missing.

In his original debut in "Banjo Frenzy", Cuddles had an entirely different appearance. He didn't have any pink features on his body, including his cheeks and bunny slippers. His fur is also more golden than laser yellow. He also had an upside-down triangle for a nose.

Occupations

Cuddles has several occupations in the series. He has been a firefighter in "Who's To Flame?", though he was the first member of the rescue squad to be killed off. He was a farmer in Don't Yank My Chain, but he ends up getting decapitated by his well's bucket. He was a daredevil in Mime To Five who was supposed to be fire out of a canon by Toothy, but the beaver misinterpreted Mime's instructions, leading to both of their demises. He was also delivery boy in Aw, Shucks!, a journalist in See What Develops, and an Easter bunny in Just Be Claus.

Relationships

Friends and love interests

Cuddles is on great terms with a lot of the characters. His best friend is Toothy, and the two have been seen engaging in activities together. A conflict was briefly held in Camp Pokeneyeout, where a simple misunderstanding turned into a very fierce war between the two. However, the two quickly make up in the end. Another friend Cuddles regularly hangs out with is Lumpy. Lumpy usually has an authority role over Cuddles, and both characters appear to be very close companions for one another. However, Cuddles instructed Toothy to hit Lumpy with a snowball when the latter was simply walking down the street in Strain Kringle.

Cuddles and Giggles at a fast-food restaurant, playfully enjoying each other's company.

Cuddles is close friends with Giggles, and the two had romantic interactions together. He spends the entirety of The Carpal Tunnel of Love attempting to woe her in numerous ways. They also shared a kiss in a reference to [Lady and the Tramp] as zombies in Remains to be Seen. However, some episodes depict the two as nothing more as friends. When directly asked about the topic, Kenn Navarro responded that the relationship is only used on an episode basis rather than as an established one[8]. Giggles has also been seen with other characters, which backs up Kenn Navarro's answer.

Flaky is another friend Cuddles regularly hangs out with. They would partake in various activities together, but Flaky seems to not be fond of these events. In some instances, Cuddles even forces Flaky into these sports. He completely ignores Flaky’s warnings in Water You Wading For and he forces Flaky into these activates in Let It Slide and The Wrong Side of the Tracks. In Snow Place to Go, he along with Lumpy, Russell, and Toothy volunteer Flaky to retrieve the can from Giggles’ dead body. However, he also cringes upon witnessing her death in Mine To Five and expresses shock towards her death in Take Your Seat.

Petunia and Cuddles are both characters who appear in numerous of the episodes, yet they have never directly interacted (at least as of on-screen). They are only seen in big groups with other characters as seen in From A to Zoo, Kringle Feast, I Get a Trick Out of You, The Wrong Side of the Tracks, Take a Hike, and Home Is Where the Hurt Is. The most that could be said is that she served Cuddles burgers and fries in Flippin' Burgers, and how she was annoyed by Cuddles' mischief in Camp Pokeneyeout.

Cuddles' relationship with Handy has mostly been positive but at times, the latter has shown to be not too fond of the former. In The Wrong Side of the Tracks, Handy made fun of Cuddles' lack of arms when they have been ripped off, and he didn't even care about Cuddles' demise. In In a Jam, Cuddles admired Handy's band and tries to get into it. However, Handy was not too fond of Cuddles in here as he, along with Lumpy and Sniffles, thought the rabbit's guitar skills were abysmal and Cuddles later indirectly caused Handy's death. In Don't Yank My Chain, Cuddles was frightened by the sight of seeing Handy in his well, which caused him to drop all the way to the bottom again.

Both being Toothy's closest friends, Cuddles and Sniffles almost always appear with Toothy when together, where the three would form a trio. The trio of the three characters can be seen in some episodes such as Class Act, Remains to be Seen, From A to Zoo, Party Animal, and Take a Hike. In Wipe Out!, the two were briefly seen playing with a beach ball without Toothy. However, at times, it seems that the relationship is more dependent on Toothy's presence, as in Camp Pokeneyeout, Sniffles attacked Cuddles with his own invention after Cuddles attacked Toothy. Cuddles also annoys Sniffles by messing with the lights and subsequently getting Handy killed in In a Jam.

Cuddles is friends with Russell, as he was seen riding his ship along with several other characters in Snow Place to Go. They also play baseball with Toothy and Cro-Marmot in Can't Stop Coffin. They are seen in a group trick-or-treating in Remains to be Seen.

Cuddles and The Mole seem to be friends for the most part. They both go to the same birthday parties in I Get a Trick Out of You and Party Animal. Both characters also work as firemen in Who's to Flame?. However, sometimes, things do not go so well due to The Mole's blindness. Examples of this are in In a Jam, in which The Mole makes Cuddles give a second amount of blood, despite how he gave Cuddles a button the first time. Later, he accidentally kills Cuddles and mistakes him for a chair afterwards. In Home Is Where the Hurt Is, they operate a wood chipper together until the Mole unknowingly killed Cuddles. In A Sight for Sore Eyes, Cuddles watches as The Mole drops something in his drink, which makes him sick.

Cuddles and Mime have interacted a few times. They both appear together in Party Animal to help with Flippy's birthday and in Home Is Where the Hurt Is when they work together to build a house for Giggles. Cuddles buys a guitar from Mime in In a Jam.

Cro-Marmot is another one of Cuddles' friends, as shown in Autopsy Turvy, in which they and Toothy play dress-up and in Can't Stop Coffin, they're seen playing baseball together.

Cuddles seems to be a fan of Splendid as he appears in Wrath of Con, where he is attending to the latter's speech, along with various other characters. He interacts with Splendid again in Just Be Claus when he gives him his Easter basket filled with eggs that need delivering, after getting sliced apart. Splendid then tears his ears off.

Foes and rivals
Nutty giving chase to Cuddles out of a hankering for his ice cream.

One of the few characters Cuddles actually harbor a disliking for is Nutty. In Sweet Ride, he was horrified when he saw Nutty chasing him for his ice cream cone, and showed no concern for him when he died, even showing relief towards the fact that he could enjoy his treat. In Class Act, Cuddles seemed to be put off at witnessing Nutty biting a chunk of both Sniffles' body and costume. Cuddles also showed annoyance at Nutty stealing his car in Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm. Also, while to a lesser extent, Cuddles seemed indifferent towards accidentally burning Nutty's eye in Camp Pokeneyeout. The only positive instance of Cuddles' opinion of Nutty is that he was polite to him in In a Jam and showed no contempt towards the fact that both of them were auditioning for the same part in Lumpy's band despite obviously wanting a part.

Lifty, Shifty, and Cuddles appear in the same episode on several occasions but rarely interact, but when they do, they oddly aren't always at ends. Their most significant interaction and only negative one was Junk in the Trunk, where Cuddles unwittingly helps Lifty and Shifty with their scheme, until they steal his pet mouse and get him killed. The rest of their interactions seem netural or even friendly at times, as were also supposed to eat a Christmas dinner in Kringle Feast. They all even went trick-or-treating in Remains to be Seen. In Claw, Lifty and Shifty attempted to save Cuddles from the claw, which shows that they occasionally care about him.

Cuddles appears to dislike Disco Bear for apparently kissing Giggles in YouTube 101: Subscriptions. However, they work together in the fire brigade in Who's to Flame? and seem to have no problems with each other, that is until Disco Bear drives the firetruck without lowering the ladder first, getting Cuddles killed.

Like most characters, Cuddles strongly fears Flippy's evil side. As seen in episodes such as This Is Your Knife, Party Animal and Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow, Flippy's evil side would kill Cuddles.

Speech

Cuddles speaks in a high-pitched voice. Like most characters, Cuddles' dialogue is often jumbled and mostly consists of gibberish. However, occasionally, Cuddles would speak clear English. Cuddles is the first character to spoke an English sentence, as he said the lines "Spin Faster, Spin Faster" in Spin Fun Knowin' Ya. His catchphrases often include the interjection "Come on". He is one of the few characters to swear, as he said the word "Fuck" in "In a Jam". In the Dick Figures parody, "New Season Teaser", Cuddles is given intelligible dialogue, making him the only character to speak full sentences coherently.

Deaths

Cuddles has the highest number of deaths than any other character, has died in his debut, and rarely survives. Cuddles is one of the three characters to die in all of their starring roles, the other two being the raccoon duo Lifty & Shifty. Most of Cuddles' deaths usually involve his intestines, being sliced apart, getting crushed, and impaled. Cuddles have been the most frequent victims to the following characters: Toothy, Flaky, Lifty, Cro-Marmot, Lumpy, and Flippy.
