While Lumpy's true origins remain mysterious, he was originally derived from as a bear character in a sketch. In the drawing itself, the bear character is roasting marshmallows on a stick while three other woodland characters are sitting on a log. {{citation needed}} This sketch was later reworked into an animated short, but with a few differences; notably, the bear was changed into a blue dinosaur-like creature, and he is shown playing a banjo instead of roasting marshmallows. Offsetting the short's creation, the characters were given a major redesign in the public release of [[Spin Fun Knowin Ya|''Spin Fun Knowin Ya'']]. The dinosaur in particular was reworked into a moose with mismatched antlers named Lumpy.
Lumpy was derived from a bear character that was sketched during the development of the show.

"For a lazy lunch, try left-over loaf!."
— Lumpy's starring intro, Season 3 of Happy Tree Friends

Lumpy is one of the main characters in the Happy Tree Friends franchise. He is tall blue moose with mismatched antlers who is characterized by his stupidity. Despite his obliviousness, Lumpy is often shown to have good intentions and rarely means any sincere harm. He is recognized by his unique appearance compared to other major characters in the series. He is good friends with several characters, particularly Cuddles and Giggles. While Lumpy made his official debut in Spin Fun Knowin' Ya, a blue dinosaur-like character resembling him appeared in the unreleased pilot, Banjo Frenzy.

Since his debut, Lumpy has appeared in over 100 episodes (93 of which being regular episodes), has cameoed in several other Mondo shows, has appeared in many products in the Happy Tree Friends franchise, and has the highest number of kills in the series. Lumpy remains one of the most iconic characters in the franchise.

Concept and creation

Lumpy was derived from a bear character that was sketched during the development of the show.

Biography

General information

Personality

Lumpy is a bumbling moose frequently portrayed as dimwitted, clumsy, and extremely unintelligent. In most episodes, his stupidity drives the plot and often leaves several characters dead, including himself on occasion. However, he is well-meaning, as he would rather help his fellow peers and take any opportunity to rescue his friends when they are endangered. Lumpy is constantly depicted as a caretaker for several characters, and sometimes non-anthropomorphic animals or objects, such as cows, his pet elephant, or an ear of giant corn.

However, despite his kind nature, he is sometimes portrayed as an antagonistic character. In Dunce Upon a Time, he is depicted as a giant, where he kills several of his hostages after they have fled from their respective cages. In Happy Trails Pt. 2: Jumping the Shark, he participated in murdering Flaky or at least supported it in some sort of way. An infamous example of Lumpy's antagonistic side has occurred throughout We're Scrooged!, where he is portrayed as a greedy business owner. His villainous acts include stealing coins from The Mole's charity bucket and intentionally killing Toothy to make a profit from his dismembered body parts. In Every Litter Bit Hurts, he is repeatedly seen committing harmful acts toward the environment. In Mime To Five, Lumpy is portrayed as a circus's oppressive and greedy owner. Most notably, in this episode, he treats Mime poorly, and uses unethical treatment to suppress his Killer Ducks. In The Carpal Tunnel of Love, he interferes with Cuddles' plan to show his affection for Giggles. In the same episode, he does careless actions that wind up killing the other characters in the cafe, such as stealing Handy's truck

Lumpy enjoys golfing, as seen in episodes like "Chew Said A Mouthful" and "Tongue In Cheek". He is a farmer in some episodes [citation needed] and cares about his farm, going to lengths to protect it that often results at his own expense, such as destroying his own house [citation needed] or getting himself killed [citation needed]. Lumpy has a sizable appetite and is most often seen eating various foods like sandwiches, meat, and beans. As demonstrated in a few episodes, Lumpy is skilled in a few talents, such as surfing [citation needed] or swimming [citation needed].

While Lumpy often showcases his extremely low intelligence, there have been just as many instances where Lumpy has become relatively competent and knowledgeable. For example, in Doggone It, Lumpy was the only character to even considered the temperament of Whistle to be caused by a whistling sound.

Physical information

Lumpy is a tall blue moose with mismatched antlers. His eyes are almost always crossed when he's idle, and his teeth are often seen sticking from beneath his nose when wearing his standard expression. He is notably slimmer and taller than the rest of the Tree Friends. In general, Lumpy has a very unique design compared to most characters. He lacks a heart-shaped nose and has two visible nostrils in place of it. He also lacks mitten hands, as his hands are always seen possessing four-fingered digits. He is one of the characters to have pupils without a prominent wedge, thus resembling a Pac-Man shape.

Though Lumpy is mainly depicted as bald, he is sometimes drawn with visible hair. In the episode "Double Whammy Part I", he is shown to have black facial hair. Even though his eyes are normally seen as black, they are revealed to be blue in "Concrete Solution" and green in "Wishy Washy".

Lumpy was briefly depicted with hoof-like feet akin to a moose in "Every Litter Bit Hurts". However, he has visible toes in "Wipe Out!".

While Lumpy seems to be completely nude, he has worn various outfits in several episodes, such as jackets, aprons, pants, shirts, and overalls. However, according to "Baking Me Crazy", it's implied that Lumpy wears an invisible T-shirt that blends in with his blue fur. When he takes it off, he can be seen with a tan line, nipples, buttocks, and unseen genitals.

Speech

Lumpy speaks with a very low-pitched voice. He has spoken clear English the most times out of all the characters. He sometimes cusses "What the fuck?" or "What the hell?" whenever he sees something strange or disturbing. He was able to tell Sniffles about Toothy breaking his arm in Blast from the Past in clear English.

Trivia

  • His MySpace account mentions that his favorite foods are cheese and sandwiches, that his favorite dessert is cheesecake, and that he likes to talk to lettuce. [citation needed]
  • According to the Favorite Character poll in 2003[1], Lumpy placed second with 16%, beaten by Flippy (32%) and putting him above Nutty, Cuddles, Flaky, Petunia, and Giggles (all at 6%). In the Best Happy Tree Friends Character tournament, he lost against Splendid on Round 2.[2]
