''Happy Tree Friends Edition'' also adds a toggle on the title screen to switch between vanilla ''The Crackpet Show'' theme and ''Happy Tree Friends Edition'' theme. The game's logo appearance is also affected by the toggle. While in the lobby in the ''Happy Tree Friends Edition'' theme, the character selection defaults to Cuddles instead of Bunny, which also applies in the tutorial sequence if this is the player's first time playing, though both groups are playable in either theme. The host also changes between themes, with [[Lumpy]], complete with voice samples by [[David Winn]], taking over Host Parrot in the ''Happy Tree Friends Edition'' theme, but this does not change the boss in Episode 18: Plot Twist, which ends with fighting Host Parrot regardless of theme. They had a dream to make a shoot'em up in the style of a show like ''Happy Tree Friends''.<ref name=xboxama>[https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/comments/16ugt6z/ama_todays_guests_the_team_behind_the_crackpet r/XboxSeriesX] ''"AMA: Today's guests: the team behind The Crackpet Show, as well as the main guest of the program, the creators of the legendary Happy Tree Friends"'' (dvabel)</ref> The studio happened to have people who back in the 90s watched gore cartoons, including the show. The gameplay was inspired by ''[[wikipedia:Enter the Gungeon|Enter the Gungeon]]'' (2016) because Vixa Games have a lot of their staff being fans of the aforementioned game. ''The Crackpet Show'' was designed to combine the couch co-op experience with the premise of a bizarre TV show. The game was made as a rogue-lite as it was considered the best fit for the episodic TV show-style format, stackable perks, and the sponsors mechanic.<ref name=ravenage-interview>https://nitter.net/Ravenage_Games/status/1732390563893166569 @Ravenage_Games on Twitter, December 6, 2023</ref> During development, they avoided making red characters due to the red enemy bullets, with Flaky's inclusion being an oversight. <ref>Regarding [[Splendont|Splendon't]] - we highly avoid using red color in our characters since there are red bullets that you have to avoid so that would be simply unreadable.(klaudzia (09/01/2023), <nowiki>#general-chat</nowiki>, Vixa Games Discord server)</ref><ref>''"Haha, that's why some rules like reserving colors for certain elements come in handy, so that there's no overthinking. Everything looks different in motion. (: I consider adding Flaky a small fuckup, but who knows - if there won't be any complaints about her getting lost, we might consider adding other red characters like Spledon't in the future."'' (klaudzia (09/01/2023), <nowiki>#general-chat</nowiki>, Vixa Games Discord server)</ref>
When it comes to picking a publisher, Vixa Games considered it based on its proven track record and a good understanding of the game genre. They decided on Ravenage Games for their clear "can do" approach and proactive engagement in contributing to the development ideas. Ravenage's dedication to the success of the project became Vixa Games' deciding point to start their collaboration.<ref name=ravenage-interview></ref> Said collaboration, ''Happy Tree Friends Edition'', came about when the Brand Manager of Ravenage Games had the idea to send a proposal to [[MondoMedia]] to combine both works together. MondoMedia supported the idea. Despite being an indie studio, Vixa Games found the collaboration work easier thanks to the support from the ''Happy Tree Friends'' community.<ref name=xboxama></ref>

Another notable promotional campaign is [https://nitter.net/htfedition/status/1703096424487903251#m a GIF tweet] depicting Cuddles and Bunny and with the caption, "If this tweet reaches 1 million views, we'll reach out to Mondo Media with a request to continue creating new <nowiki>#HappyTreeFriends</nowiki> Episodes!" implying that the ''Happy Tree Friends'' side would be able to continue beyond "Too Much Scream Time" if the tweet's requested view count was reached. Other than those and general ''The Crackpet Show'' news, the Twitter account also retweets some of the fan art with the appropriate hastag. Meanwhile, the TikTok account is used to post short clips promoting ''Happy Tree Friends Edition'', either using material or footage from the downloadable content or using clips of ''Happy Tree Friends'' shorts centered around the featured characters, like using ''[[Giggles' Valentine's Smoochie]]'' to represent Giggles.
Post-release, the htfedition account has held a couple more key giveaways, albeit with smaller participation to the point that the second post-release giveaway contest had no winners announced. It also posted daily to either promote ''The Crackpet Show'' or related Ravenage game discounts, fanwork, or as basic user engagement through questions or polls about ''Happy Tree Friends'', but it saw reduced activity on December 2023. One main highlight during post-release was a poll asking which ''Happy Tree Friends'' character users would like to see in ''The Crackpet Show''.<ref>https://twitter.com/htfedition/status/1719677437749956750 ''"What character would you like to see in the game? <nowiki>#TheCrackpetShow #HappyTreeFriends #HappyTreeFriendsAreBack</nowiki>"'' (@htfedition on X/Twitter, November 1, 2023)</ref> It was held on November 1, 2023 and featured the characters Flippy, [[Mime]], [[Lifty & Shifty|Lifty]], and [[Disco Bear]] as candidates. The poll lasted for a week, with Flippy winning as a result at 63.7%, while Mime got 15.6%, Lifty got 8.4%, and Disco Bear got 12.3%. This decision would lead to Flippy's (and Fliqpy's) inclusion in ''The Crackpet Show: Happy Tree Friends Edition'' released on December 15, 2023 as part of the base game's anniversary.

The Crackpet Show is a game released by Ravenage Games. It is a top-down shoot 'em up presented in a roguelike format where a player or players (up to four) playing cooperatively progress from room to room killing enemies using equipped weapons and special items helped by advantageous effects granted by perks to earn Fame for upgrades in the Campaign mode or as high score in the Endless mode. Its roguelike format means that every run is not the same, randomness plays heavily in room progression, and equipment and perks do not carry over between runs. It was originally released as an indie game for the PC running Windows and for the Nintendo Switch on December 15, 2022[8].
The Crackpet Show: Happy Tree Friends Edition is an optional downloadable content for The Crackpet Show that adds content based on Happy Tree Friends slated for release on September 27, 2023 for Windows via Steam and GOG.com and the Nintendo Switch. The game is launched with Happy Tree Friends Edition pre-installed on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, as well as the Epic Games Store release, all slated to be released on the same date. Happy Tree Friends Edition is part of a collaboration between MondoMedia, Vixa Games, and Ravenage Games. The collaboration results in this DLC for The Crackpet Show side and a short for the web series for the Happy Tree Friends side titled "Too Much Scream Time"[9]. This is the second Happy Tree Friends-related game to be released on a major video game console since Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm (2008) in over fourteen years and it is also the first one to be released on Nintendo and Sony platforms. The DLC is priced at $2.99 in the US region if bought individually on Steam, GOG.com, or the Nintendo eShop, while other platforms have it priced at $19.99 due to it being preinstalled with the base game.[10]

Gameplay[edit]
The Crackpet Show is a top-down shoot 'em up presented in a roguelike format. Up to four players can play cooperatively, each playing as one of the characters. The base version of The Crackpet Show features 8 characters, who are Bunny, Cowie, Rusty, Sharky, Crocodile, Panda, Evil Goat, and Piggy. If the player chooses, they may play a character with an alternate skin, though the skins have to be unlocked first, except for Panda, who starts out with 2 alternate skins from the start. After picking a character, the player picks a starting class, though they may mix up their loadout by dropping the chosen equipment, picking another class, and then re-picking the dropped weapon/item.
- Assault: Focuses only on damage. Comes with the Pew Gun and the Anvil Drop special item.
- Engineer: Focuses on debilitating enemies. Comes with the Zap Gun (chance to stun) and the Turret special item.
- Medic: Focuses on defensive playstyle. Comes with the Lob-o-Gun (shoots bullets in an arc) and the Bandages special item.
- Tank: Focuses on herding enemies through distraction. Comes with the Shotgun (spread shot of 3 bullets) and the Taunt special item.
Weapons are players' main method of attack. Players automatically aim for the closest enemy, though the player may change target via dedicated buttons. Each weapon behaves differently and this information can be shown by reading its description. Players start off only being able to equip one weapon, but eventually the player is allowed to bring two to switch between. A player can not be weaponless, but if this happens, the player enters the next room with their chosen class weapon.
A special item has various effects from inflicting damage to affecting enemy behavior. Like weapons, a single use of an item puts it into cooldown until it can be used again, but unlike weapons, an item has a limited number of charges before it runs out, and a player can only hold one special item at a time.
Once players are ready, they may step into the round area that says "START" to begin the game. Every time players start a new session, they are given a choice of perks to claim. Perks give advantageous effects to the affected and their effects can be stacked with each other. Only one player can claim one perk machine at a time, so if multiple players claim the same perk, they will be subjected to a button-press minigame where the winner will be the one to claim the chosen perk. In the game, the players face rooms of enemies, with some layouts having traps that can damage both players and enemies alike. Each enemy type attacks differently, but their attacks are distinguished by the use of the color red. A player starts off with six hit points, and taking any damage deducts it by one. If a player runs out of health, they will be considered dead, but in co-op, a timer will appear to give allies a chance to revive the fallen player with one hit point. If all players are dead, however, the run ends. To move on to the next room, all enemies must be killed. Doing this in co-op will also revive all fallen players with one hit point. Players' weapon and special item pickups do not carry between runs whether a previous run is a success or a failure.
The game features Campaign and Endless game modes. Campaign is the game's main story where players, whether playing solo or co-op up to four players, progress through three seasons each consisting of six episodes, for a total of eighteen episodes. Episode progress is tracked by clear completion, meaning players have to clear a new episode to unlock the next. An episode consists of a randomly-generated stage progression where players vote to pick. A stage has a random layout and typically can be either the normal Enemy, Weapon, Perk, or some other category, with any stage category other than Enemy rewarding the players depending on the stage type. For example, if the stage is a Weapon room, then a weapon is rewarded after defeating all the enemies inside. The player can also encounter minibosses starting from Episode 4 onwards, but all episodes in general end with a major boss fight.
In Campaign, players earn Fame used to obtain Upgrade Coins and Likes for purchasing at the Shop rooms. Upgrade Coins are then used in the lobby to upgrade either a weapon, an item, or a perk offered randomly. Successfully clearing an episode will earn the players Trophies and skin cards to be used to unlock Sponsor skills and the wheel of fortune respectively. Sponsors are where the player can unlock additional features and gameplay advantages, but the player also has a choice to not assign a Sponsor skill once it is unlocked. Meanwhile, the wheel of fortune is used to unlock alternate skins for the playable characters, but it takes 5 skin cards per use and the skin rewarded is random.
The Endless mode is available once the player cleared Season One. The players will start off in the lobby like in Campaign, but with the Sponsors and upgrades unavailable. However, every player is able to equip two weapons and find hearts occasionally dropped from enemies to heal without using Sponsors. Every player is also given a perk to increase damage and movement speed at the start. Endless mode has players face waves of various enemies. Every 10 waves, the player faces a random boss. As the mode goes on, the enemies gradually grow stronger, but the weapon/item/perk power and the likeliness of epic weapons and special items to drop are also gradually increased. The mode only ends if all players are dead.
Happy Tree Friends Edition content[edit]
The Crackpet Show: Happy Tree Friends Edition is around 35.7 MB (3 MB according to the Nintendo eShop listing) in size.
Happy Tree Friends Edition adds Cuddles, Giggles, Flaky, Toothy, Nutty, Petunia, Handy, Sniffles (making his first playable video game debut), and Splendid as playable characters. On December 15, 2023, Flippy was added as a playable character with Fliqpy being his alternate skin in a free update for the DLC.[11] Each of the included characters has four variants of voice clips from their respective voice actors for when they walk out of their character pods, though regardless of what skin is selected, both versions of Flippy use Fliqpy's voice clips. With the exception of Flippy, they have no alternate skins. Each playable Happy Tree Friends character has unique death animations based on certain deaths/injuries from the show:
- Cuddles' face is torn off. ("This Is Your Knife")
- Giggles' eyeballs are forced into her eye sockets and her torso is ripped open. ("You're Baking Me Crazy")
- Flaky has the top half of her head cracked open, exposing her brain. ("Wipe Out!")
- Toothy ends up with a hole in the middle of his head. ("From A to Zoo")
- Nutty loses his lower jaw and his torso is ripped open. ("Chew Said a Mouthful")
- Petunia is split in half horizontally and her face is wounded. ("Wrath of Con" and "Reindeer Kringle")
- Handy's head and tip of his tail explode. ("Dunce Upon a Time")
- Sniffles loses both arms. ("As You Wish")
- Splendid's nose and facial skin are torn off. ("Gems the Breaks")
- Flippy's eyes are gouged and his teeth are broken.[note 1] ("Autopsy Turvy", based on an imaginary Flipped Out Flippy's death)
Happy Tree Friends Edition also adds a toggle on the title screen to switch between vanilla The Crackpet Show theme and Happy Tree Friends Edition theme. This alters the title screen appearance and music, with the Happy Tree Friends Edition theme featuring all playable characters from The Crackpet Show side and all playable characters except Petunia and Flippy from the Happy Tree Friends side and playing the Happy Tree Friends theme. The game's logo appearance is also affected by the toggle. While in the lobby in the Happy Tree Friends Edition theme, the character selection defaults to Cuddles instead of Bunny, which also applies in the tutorial sequence if this is the player's first time playing, though both groups are playable in either theme. The host also changes between themes, with Lumpy, complete with voice samples by David Winn, taking over Host Parrot in the Happy Tree Friends Edition theme, but this does not change the boss in Episode 18: Plot Twist, which ends with fighting Host Parrot regardless of theme. This also does not apply to Endless mode, which will always display Host Parrot on the results screen.
Installing Happy Tree Friends Edition also modifies the season clear screens after completing the first two seasons to include a Happy Tree Friends character alongside the featured crackpet. Season One adds Cuddles, while Season Two adds Handy.
If the player boots up Happy Tree Friends Edition for the first time, regardless of the player's current progress in the base game, a snippet of "Too Much Scream Time" will be played.

Development[edit]
According to Vixa Games, The Crackpet Show has always been created using Happy Tree Friends as a source of inspiration. They had a dream to make a shoot'em up in the style of a show like Happy Tree Friends.[15] The studio happened to have people who back in the 90s watched gore cartoons, including the show. The gameplay was inspired by Enter the Gungeon (2016) because Vixa Games have a lot of their staff being fans of the aforementioned game. The Crackpet Show was designed to combine the couch co-op experience with the premise of a bizarre TV show. The game was made as a rogue-lite as it was considered the best fit for the episodic TV show-style format, stackable perks, and the sponsors mechanic.[16] During development, they avoided making red characters due to the red enemy bullets, with Flaky's inclusion being an oversight. [17][18]
When it comes to picking a publisher, Vixa Games considered it based on its proven track record and a good understanding of the game genre. They decided on Ravenage Games for their clear "can do" approach and proactive engagement in contributing to the development ideas. Ravenage's dedication to the success of the project became Vixa Games' deciding point to start their collaboration.[16] Said collaboration, Happy Tree Friends Edition, came about when the Brand Manager of Ravenage Games had the idea to send a proposal to MondoMedia to combine both works together. MondoMedia supported the idea. Despite being an indie studio, Vixa Games found the collaboration work easier thanks to the support from the Happy Tree Friends community.[15]
Promotion[edit]
Prior to Happy Tree Friends Edition, The Crackpet Show has been promoted on subreddits as being inspired by classic gore cartoons, with Happy Tree Friends being constantly namedropped[19]. It took until August 2023 for the collaboration news to be made official, preceded by an announcement[20] on Vixa Games' Discord server that The Crackpet Show would be receiving an update.
Since the announcement of Happy Tree Friends Edition on August 17, 2023[21], the downloadable content continued to be promoted in the days leading up to its release date. Near the end of August 2023, Happy Tree Friends Edition got its own X (@htfedition) and TikTok (@happytreefriendsthegame) accounts dedicated to promoting it and related events. The X account is where most events are announced, with its main highlight being the Fan Art Contest where X or Instagram users were encouraged to draw fan art of Happy Tree Friends or The Crackpet Show and upload it with the hashtag #HappyTreeFriendsAreBack. The event was going to last up to September 20, 2023 until it was given an extension up to September 26, 2023 in order to give more users a chance to participate[22]. Users that managed to place top 10 after the event would be eligible to receive a copy of The Crackpet Show for any platform for free. Another notable promotional campaign is a GIF tweet depicting Cuddles and Bunny and with the caption, "If this tweet reaches 1 million views, we'll reach out to Mondo Media with a request to continue creating new #HappyTreeFriends Episodes!" implying that the Happy Tree Friends side would be able to continue beyond "Too Much Scream Time" if the tweet's requested view count was reached. Other than those and general The Crackpet Show news, the Twitter account also retweets some of the fan art with the appropriate hastag. Meanwhile, the TikTok account is used to post short clips promoting Happy Tree Friends Edition, either using material or footage from the downloadable content or using clips of Happy Tree Friends shorts centered around the featured characters, like using Giggles' Valentine's Smoochie to represent Giggles.
Post-release, the htfedition account has held a couple more key giveaways, albeit with smaller participation to the point that the second post-release giveaway contest had no winners announced. It also posted daily to either promote The Crackpet Show or related Ravenage game discounts, fanwork, or as basic user engagement through questions or polls about Happy Tree Friends, but it saw reduced activity on December 2023. One main highlight during post-release was a poll asking which Happy Tree Friends character users would like to see in The Crackpet Show.[23] It was held on November 1, 2023 and featured the characters Flippy, Mime, Lifty, and Disco Bear as candidates. The poll lasted for a week, with Flippy winning as a result at 63.7%, while Mime got 15.6%, Lifty got 8.4%, and Disco Bear got 12.3%. This decision would lead to Flippy's (and Fliqpy's) inclusion in The Crackpet Show: Happy Tree Friends Edition released on December 15, 2023 as part of the base game's anniversary.
Graphical mistakes[edit]
- Lumpy's portrait is not placed properly during the tutorial prompts, resulting in the cut off part of his left antler visible to the player.
- Giggles' head marking is missing from the audience sign depicting her.
- Nutty's player sprite and HUD icon are missing the candies on the sides of his head, even though his icon on the audience sign and his minigame portraits both depict him with the candies properly. This design mistake also applies to his animated avatar, sticker, and profile backgrounds sold on the Steam Points Shop.
- Using the Invisibility item may have unintended layering errors when worn by certain characters, typically ones with additional but separate graphical parts on the head:
- In general, the wider head shapes of the Happy Tree Friends characters mean that a bit of the head remains visible outside the mask.
- On Cuddles, it will result in his hair tuft remaining visible over the mask due to the tuft being a layer above his head graphic. Same for the ears due to their shape and layering.
- On Flaky, it will result in her hair on top of her head remaining visible over the mask.
- On Petunia, it will result in her flower decoration remaining visible over the mask.
- On Handy, it will result in his hat being layered over and clipping through the mask instead of being covered up or removed.
- On Flippy, it will result in his hat and ears remaining visible over the mask.
- After Flippy is revived with the Auto-Revive item, Flippy's eyes will be floating over his face until he finishes the level.
-

Trivia[edit]
- There is no Flippy variation of the character sign held up by the purple dog audience member.
